Pathogen and benefit sharing

This is the video abstract of the recently concluded project on pathogen- and benefit- sharing, co-coordinated by Prof. Moon and Prof. Burci, principal researcher Anthony Rizk, all from the Graduate Institute in Geneva. This very timely research addresses the issue of sharing information crucial for effective global health governance. The team of researchers has identified practices, formal and informal arrangements, as well as avenues to improve the way in which countries can share what they know about pathogens and devise mechanisms for sharing ensuing benefits, such as vaccines or ground-breaking results. Prof. Burci outlines the details of pathogen sharing, which lay at the roots of the influenza vaccine, for example. He also explains the more difficult aspects of determining what and how related benefits can be shared, particularly since pathogens, as other entities, are internationally governed under the sovereignty principle. (territories or countries where pathogens are found, own them). Prof. Moon highlights how this project is relevant in the context of the Covid – 19 crisis: by providing the necessary information that could help diplomats and international experts find and develop effective mechanisms of cooperation in case of epidemics and pandemics. Doctoral researcher Anthony Rizk emphasizes and explains why the benefit-sharing issue needs to be quickly resolved for pathogen-sharing to continue happening.
