Combining Sociological, Economic and Epidemiological Evidence to Target Malaria Interventions in Papua New Guinea and Beyond

Can going beyond disease transmission factors improve the success of malaria interventions?

Project Summary

Malaria remains a major burden in many tropical countries. While the World Health Organization currently advises to target interventions based exclusively on malaria risk, a customized approach is needed to account for local circumstances.  Intervention success encompasses not only epidemiological aspects but is also dependent on socio-economic and cultural factors, policies or the conditions of the local health system (‘stratification dimensions’).

Hence, social and natural science researchers in collaboration with malaria programme stakeholders will take a participatory approach to devise a conceptual framework for multi-dimensional malaria interventions. Papua New Guinea (PNG) with its complex malaria epidemiology serves as a model country. Additionally, based of qualitative inquiries and quantitative data, recommendations for sub-national implementation of tailored interventions in PNG will be made.

The project’s findings seek to inform practitioners and policymakers in other malaria-endemic countries in order to implement the most effective combination of malaria interventions in a given setting.
