This article explores the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine child immunization in Ghana, utilizing data from all 260 districts between 2018 and 2021. The findings show a 6% drop in immunizations during the April 2020 lockdown, with recovery to pre-pandemic levels by June 2020. Disruptions were more severe in lockdown-affected areas but time-critical vaccines, like polio, remained largely unaffected.
The study highlights how fear of COVID-19 and postponed vaccination campaigns contributed to the decline. It emphasizes the resilience of Ghana’s healthcare system and the importance of monitoring district-level data to guide targeted health policies during future pandemics.
